Acquisition and Recovery of Rwandan Nationality

Foreigner national of eighteen years (18) and above living in Rwanda or abroad who fulfills the necessary requirements as provided for by the Rwandan law on nationality. Rwandan nationality is obtained on the following grounds:

1. Nationality by birth on Rwandan territory
2. Nationality by marriage
3. Nationality by adoption
4. Nationality by naturalization
5. Nationality by Rwandan origin
6. Recovery of Rwandan Nationality and/or citizenship

Renouncing Rwandan Nationality and/or citizenship

Kindly note that the process of renunciation of Rwandan Nationality is a comprehensive one that can take up to 3 years. Your application will go through various instances and the President's cabinet until it the renunciation will be published in the Official Gazette.

Requirements:

• Application letter motivating reasons of renouncing the Rwandan nationality;
• Proof of acquisition of another nationality OR a naturalization assurance;
• Certificate proving that the applicant is not subject to criminal proceedings in Rwanda (police clearance);
• Detailed CV;
• Two recently taken colored passport size photos with white background;
• Testimonies from at least three people who know him/her as a Rwandan (place of residence, Profession, relationship, telephone number);
• The identity documents and travel documents must be returned to the Embassy once the request is granted;
